Meet Your Neighbors

With this edition of the Pinnacle Tower Newsletter we have a new column - Meet Your Neighbors.  Each month resident Adrienne Kirkeby will be interviewing Pinnacle residents so that we may all get to know one another better.

People who live at the Pinnacle generally will tell you that they live in a friendly building. Who hasn’t been involved in a lively elevator conversation or exchanged stories with people in the exercise room? It seems we soon get to know what people look like, but it’s hard to remember names.

This month we are featuring an interview with John and Pat Brix. Here they are at home in unit #2503 with the family. The Brixes family motto is, “Dogs are not our whole life, but they make our lives whole.”

John and Pat are not only dog lovers, but animal lovers in every respect. They are big fans of the San Diego Zoo, The Wild Animal Park, and Helen Woodward Animal Center, an organization that, among other things, rescues and finds homes for dogs.

Here’s how the Brixes answered our questions:

When did you move to San Diego? We moved from the San Francisco area in 1995 and downtown to The Pinnacle last August.

What brought you to The Pinnacle?  We always wanted to move downtown. (Pat says she never was a true suburbanite and didn’t take to gardening.) We wanted a dog-friendly building. And the VIEW! One look at the view from the living room and we knew we were home. (John is a “boat guy” and delights in keeping track of the ships in the bay.)

What do you like best about the Marina District?  Being able to walk to everything, the fabulous restaurants, walking along the waterfront.

Any restaurant you would recommend? The Oceanaire at Island and 4th for the best clam chowder and other great seafood dishes. Richard Walker’s for a bigger breakfast than you can eat.

What don’t you like about condo living? People who ignore the rules and have a general disregard for the building and for other residents.

Besides the dogs, what are your other interests? Travel. We just got back from a trip to Antarctica. What a thrill to see an actual iceberg…and all of the penguins and other wildlife! And dancing. We took private lessons and now we just love it!

During the interview, we also found that if you want information on poker clubs or Las Vegas, talk to John. He’s played poker with the “big guys.” Pat can tell you about the latest mystery, romance or science fiction books. She is a voracious reader.

You will find the Brixes around the neighborhood, walking the dogs and generally enjoying the area. We’re glad you are here, neighbors.

We will be interviewing residents on a regular basis. If you would be interested in being interviewed or would like to recommend a neighbor, please e-mail Adrienne Kirkeby at sask23@aol.com.

The Committee

It has been a couple of months now since the newly formed committee has been meeting and the new approach in discussing and making recommendations to the Board is working well.  The Committee meets on the First Tuesday of each month.  The Committee is composed of 10 residents and each of the members of the committee bring to the table various talents.  Minutes of the meetings are posted to our Pinnacle Owners Association website.  The residents volunteering to serve are:  Todd Ruth - Committee Chair, Adrienne Kirkeby - Secretary, Tim Cloonan,

Editorial - Community & Responsibility

Accidents happen.  And perhaps it was an accident that necessitated the draining of our swimming pool earlier this month.  If it is was an accident that caused a bottle to smash into pieces in the pool then it was a very expensive accident to all of the homeowners at the Pinnacle. We must all pay the price because of the negligence of one.  That’s how it is in a community.  And the Pinnacle is no exception.

Perhaps the broken glass at the bottom of our pool was no accident.  If that be the case then we are talking about a criminal act and such an act is unacceptable at the Pinnacle.  Fortunately most everyone in our community realizes the impact we each have on one another and act responsibly.

Whether it is a cigarette or beer can thrown from a balcony, glass in the pool area, excessive speaker volume in a neighbor's condo – such actions have a negative impact on the community.

It is a sad fact that some people believe that rules were made for everyone else and do not apply to themselves.  For such people the only recourse for resolution is to fine them for infractions against the rest of us.  Everyone is asked to keep a watchful eye for anyone who may being causing harm and report them to our facilities director or concierge. - Editor: Pat McArron

March Bingo Party – food, fun & friends

Bingo, great prizes, big pizzas, and lots of fun were had by all 39 attendees of the Pinnacle's first Sunday Social Event, presented by your social committee. In just two and a half hours residents had plenty of time to play 12 games of bingo, eat 10 extra large pizzas, chat, and, most importantly, laugh. Resident David Whaley did a great job of calling the bingo games and most of us attending the event think he is a shoe-in for a second career. The terrific prizes included gift certificates to Nicky Rotten, Victoria Secret, Ghirardelli Chocolate, and Whole Foods. In addition, The French Garden donated two prizes, and, of course, Starbucks was on the gift list too. The last and best prize was a dinner for two donated by Dussini's Mediterranean Restaurant. What a great prize to top off the evening! The next Sunday Social Event is on April 29th and will be an evening of live jazz, featuring singer Karin Carson. Details and sign-up will be available in the lobby later this week.  - Reported by Becky Osterberg

Welcome & Farewell

Welcome to the following new residents (Dec 2006 – Feb 2007) at the Pinnacle Tower:

Scott, Blazie, Marsh, Stander, Heck, Sedaker/Betchley, & Berlin.

Farewell to Larry Rippey, who has been called away for awhile by the military.  He will be missed.  Larry was a tireless volunteer homeowner here at the Pinnacle.  Mike Hawes & Art Kryk have relocated to Irvine due to a new job opportunity.  We wish them well in their new endeavors.

Garage safety – everyone’s business

After careful consideration it was determined that a one way traffic pattern in the garage was in the best interests of all of us at the Pinnacle.  The One-Way signs posted in the garage are not a suggestion – they are the rule.  Anyone not following the rule is endangering the lives of others in the garage.  Note that the center aisles on P1 & P2 are the only areas where there is Two-Way traffic. Continue to use caution & drive slowly while in the garage.

One more word on CAUTION:  One of our residents learned the hard way.  Considerable damage to their car was sustained while attempting to exit the garage as the gate was coming down.  When approaching one of the garage gates be sure to use your remote control.

Balconies – a continuing problem

It seems that some in the Pinnacle do not fully appreciate the consequences of their actions.  Not only is throwing objects (of any kind) from balconies & windows prohibited – it is dangerous.  Anyone caught throwing objects will be fined and may also be liable for endangerment to others.  This policy also applies to liquids of any kind flowing from balcony drains (other than rain water during a rain).  If you have any questions regarding any of the policies, rules & regulations at the Pinnacle please contact our facilities director, Rich Giondomenico.  You are asked to report anyone you see in violation of the rules & regulations.  A reminder: the rules & regulations were created to maintain a healthy and safe environment at the Pinnacle.

Door slamming – more than a nuisance

Do you have a front door that slams shut every time you close the door?  Well – you are not alone.  There is, however, a solution.  The mechanism at the top of those doors can be adjusted so that your door will close slowly and quietly.  Why does this matter?  Well – besides being disturbingly loud, when the doors slam shut, damage can also result from this to your side panel.  Some of you made adjustments to your doors following the article that appeared in an earlier Pinnacle Tower Newsletter.  The information is worth repeating.  If you have questions about this or just not sure how to make the adjustment just email Pat McArron pat@pinnacletower.org and he will happily assist.

Maintenance – in your condo

Maintenance is never fun but it is always essential to the health of your condo.  Please refer to your Homeowner manual for instructions on what and when to follow-up on maintenance.  The manual is available on our homeowner website for easy viewing.

Water pressure – Water temperature

Are you experiencing low water pressure and/or low hot water temperature in your unit?  Please report this to our facilities director for documentation if you have not already done so or already reported this on your Fit & Finish Form, or the survey from the Attorneys.   We have made it easy for you to report concerns etc to the appropriate people.  Just visit our hoa website and click on Feedback.  It’s that easy.  In some cases the problem of low water pressure may be as simple as a clogged faucet nozzle.

Fire & Water

These are 2 words that have major implications for a building like ours.  If you have not already done so - familiarize yourself with the safety exits in the building.  Also NEVER leave a burner on your stove turned on unattended.  NEVER!  Just last week there were 2 fires Downtown that caused considerable damage just blocks from the Pinnacle.

As for water - it is something we cannot do without.  It is also something that can and has caused considerable damage in our building.  Use every precaution at your disposal to prevent flooding within your own condo.  When you leave for extended periods of time it is a good policy to turn off the water to your clothes washer.  It is also good policy to replace your hoses with the wire-reinforced kind.  And another way to protect yourself and your neighbors from water leaks is to install a water detection system.  Several homeowners at the Pinnacle have already done so.  One particular product in use in the building is from Dtection Inc, a local company.  We are mention this not as an endorsement of one particular product but as a way of introducing you to one of many such products in the market to help detect water leaks before they cause major damage.  For more information see http://www.dtection.com or contact Pete Thistle, one of your neighbors in the Pinnacle.
